7 SEO Tactics for Beginners

by Travis · 4 comments

SEO stands for (Search Engine Optimization) (duh– just kidding)… Most people think all they have to do is throw up a website and like magic everyone and their brother will visit their site. I wish this was the case, but unfortunately, making a profitable website takes so much more. Now, we have to worry about SEO tactics. As a newbie blogger this is a very important part to your blogging success. Top bloggers take SEO for granted because they have already done the steps necessary to make their blog a success, but as a newbie we need to take SEO very seriously until until our success starts to snowball. I want to teach you the 7 basic SEO techniques to get your blog on the right track. Instead of just telling about these techniques I rather just show you. Too many bloggers like to talk a big game but never show what to actually do.

SEO is a marketing function for sure, but it needs to be baked into your website, not slapped on like icing after the cake is baked. Duane Forrester

1. Keywords

This one is hard to show you, but basically when you write posts and you are trying to rank for “Cat Training”. Make sure to use that exact word throughout your post and in your title. Just don’t over do it. You don’t want to get crazy and say “Cat Training” in every sentence. Be respectful and and that Keyword will naturally flow throughout your post. Most SEO experts have a certain formula for Keyword density and all that crap, just throw that keyword into your post 5-6 times and you are all good.

2. Backlinks

I could talk all day about page rank and the best backlinks, but I would just be wasting your time. Google is like a huge popularity contest– the more backlinks pointing to your site the better. Ideally you want top quality backlinks, but when are just starting out major top sites will just laugh in your face if you ask for a backlink or charge you ridiculous amounts of money for it. So, as a beginner get any backlinks you can kind. There are all these stupid formulas that say 500 PR1 links are equal to 1 PR7 links, but as a newbie who cares just go and get backlinks.

Some of my sites have the worst backlinks but I still get ranked very high– the point being is that I have backlinks and I have a ton of them. The one thing I caution you on is don’t be stupid and get thousands of backlinks in a short amount of time. Spread your backlinks evenly over time. There are a lot of “Black Hat Methods” all that work great when used in moderation. I was going to put an affliate link here to a service that is great but I don’t want to be greedy. If you are just starting out go to Fiverr and type in backlinks in the search bar. For five bucks you can get a ton of backlinks.

As your site matures I would then focus on high-quality backlinks, but for now, just get some links. You have to be a crazy black-hatter to get your site banned, so don’t worry yourself to death.

4. Image Alt Tag

A ton of people search images, so make sure to put an Alt Tag on all your images, with a keyword. When you upload a picture into wordpress there is a field to put your Alt Tag. See picture below. This is a very basic tactic, but when done over time it makes a huge difference. Don’t be lazy and skip this field.

5. Interlink Your Pages

Backlinks are very important, but most people forget to interlink their own blog posts. Interlinking increases page views and allows search engine spiders to dig deeper into your site. Don’t waste your time interlinking your post yourself. For example, if you’re writing a new blog post and there are related topics from previous blog posts, you would put a link from the new one to the older ones– but that would be super time-consuming. Let me just introduce you to this plugin to condense your efforts and download this: SEO Smart Links. The download page will explain how to download this bad boy.

6. Readable URL’s

This is a poor excuse for a url: http://www.domain.com/id-12345.html. A proper URL should read something like this: http://www.domain.com/cat-training.html. If you are running WordPress we can fix this very easily. I also suggest doing this before you start your blog. It is super easy– let me show you.
Go to Settings and click on Permalink then follow the picture

7. Get Indexed Faster

Submit to the search engines yourself. There are services and software to do this for you, but rumor has it that this could get your site penalized or even banned. I hate rumors because most of them are untrue, but I do believe you should do this yourself the first time to understand the process. I enjoy manually submitting anything my first time, but once you understand the process automation can be your best friend.

Here is the submission page for Google to get you started: http://www.google.com/addurl.html
